Jebel Rum rises to 1,734 metres, right above Rum village. We go up a Bedouin route, with no climbing technique but using our hands, in six to eight hours.

Here is how the day unfolds with Eid, Bedouin guide and climber, and how to tell if it is right for you.

Who is it for?

Very fit hikers who are comfortable with exposure. No climbing technique is needed, but the day is long and sustained.

If in doubt, start with Jebel Khazali, shorter and less exposed.

The scramble step by step

Group scrambling up the Jebel Rum slabs

1. 4×4 to the foot

Meet at the Wadi Rum Rest House, then a few minutes by 4×4 to the foot of the mountain. We start early to climb in the cool.

2. The sandy gullies

We climb sandy gullies towards the first slopes. It is the most physical part of the approach, so find your pace.

3. First steps on sandstone

Sand gives way to rock and the hands come into play. Eid shows you where to place your feet.

4. The narrow passage

We squeeze between boulders, one step at a time. No strength needed, just calm.

5. The ledge above the valley

The most exposed section, hanging above the Rum valley. Eid stays by your side all the way.

6. The summit slabs

Wide sandstone slabs lead to the summit, at 1,734 m. The desert opens up on every side.

7. Picnic and tea

A break on top: picnic and Bedouin tea made by Eid. We take our time before heading down.

8. The descent

We go down without rushing, with the same care on the tricky sections. Back by 4×4 to the camp for the night, included in the price.

What to bring

  • Shoes with grippy soles, hiking or approach shoes.
  • Plenty of water, at least 3 litres per person.
  • Layers, a windbreaker, a hat and sunglasses.
  • Sunscreen and a 20 to 30 litre bag.

When to go?

In spring and autumn, with an early start. In summer, the scramble is only possible in the cool hours.

After rain, we wait a day for the sandstone to dry.

How much does it cost?

315 JOD on your own, 165 JOD per person for two, 110 JOD per person for 3 or 4. 4×4 transport, Eid, a Bedouin meal and water included.

Site entry (7 JOD, free with the Jordan Pass) is extra; the night at camp is included. All our prices on the climbing page.
